Kinabalu Park

Kinabalu Park was established in 1964 and covers an area of 750 square kilometers (300 square miles). Translated, it is bigger than Singapore Island. Two expeditions to explore the mountain and its flora in 1961 and 1964 were led by Professor John Corner, on behalf of the Royal Society of London, which led to the formation of Kinabalu Park.

The main entrance into the Kinabalu Park is at the Park Headquarters which is located about 92 km on the Kota Kinabalu - east coast highway. The highway lies at an elevation of 1520 meters above sea level. The park is in Sabah but more specifically in the district of Kundasang.
The Park is situated in the East Malaysian state of Sabah (British North Borneo before 1963) and stretches through the entire west coast of Sabah. One of the highest mountains in south East Asia standing at 4095.2 meters (13,455 feet).

The lowest elevation in Kinabalu Park is at Poring Hot Springs (550 meters/1,805 feet), which lies near the Park’s southern boundary. Therefore temperatures decrease from 25° C hot and humid at Poring to a cool and crisp 4°C at Mount Kinabalu’s summit. The climatic changes provide a diverse range of habitats for thousands of plant species.

Highways and sealed roads have made the park easily accessible. Now it’s an easy 2 hour scenic drive from Kota Kinabalu. It is a popular getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city where visitors can enjoy the cool invigorating air. Or, for the more intrepid to explore the forest trails or conquer Mt.Kinabalu itself. While the focus of the park is the mountain, about 80% of the visitors don’t climb all the way to the peak but come simply to enjoy the serenity of place.

Surrounding the kinabalu park is a multitude of natural attractions and enjoyable activities.A variety of accommodation is available within the park and in its surrounding areas, ranging from basic hostels to luxury chalets.
